Ukwakata was born from a simple belief: music has the power to transform lives, build communities, and bridge cultural divides. Founded in 2020 by passionate musicians and educators, we started as a small initiative to connect local music instructors with eager students.
What began as weekend music sessions in community centers has evolved into a comprehensive platform that serves thousands of music enthusiasts across the region. Today, Ukwakata stands as East Africa’s premier music education and community platform.
Our name “Ukwakata” means “truth” in Swahili - reflecting our commitment to authentic musical experiences and genuine connections within our community.
UKWAKATA is led by an Executive Committee under the guidance of a Spiritual Director, working collaboratively with leaders from all 14 deaneries.
UKWAKATA was officially established by the Tanzania Episcopal Conference (TEC) to formalize and unite Catholic choirs.
Held the first major music festival, bringing together choirs from across Dar es Salaam to celebrate in song. This event marked a significant milestone, fostering unity and collaboration among various church musical groups and setting a precedent for future gatherings.
Initiated programs to include more dioceses and parishes, significantly expanding UKWAKATA's national footprint and influence. Educational workshops and training sessions were also introduced during this period.
Launched specialized training programs for choir leaders and music composers, aiming to enhance the quality of church music across the country. Partnerships with local music academies were also formed.
Focused on using music for community development and outreach, including charity concerts and performances in remote areas to spread goodwill and support local communities.
Hosted the first-ever national choir competition, attracting participants from all over Tanzania and culminating in a grand finale that showcased the country's diverse musical talent.
Forged alliances with Catholic choir organizations in neighboring East African countries, paving the way for regional music exchanges and collaborative projects.
Launched our official website and digital platform to enhance communication, payments, and resource sharing for all members. This includes online learning modules, a member directory, and virtual event capabilities.
